DangSan Steel Railway Bridge Project, Seoul

Subj : The Use of New Technology for Scour Protection.
      As the Project Manager for the construction of "Dangsan Steel Railway Bridge" I am happy to congratulate the Contractors and Subcontractors concemed for their great efforts leading to its completion, ahead of Schedule in November 1999. Furthermore, I am also happy to confirm that the design and construction quality attained on this Project are of the highest international standards. These facts will ensure a long and safe operational life for this Bridge in the service of very many generations of the people of Seoul.

      One special aspect that enabled the above combination, of an early completion and the attainment of those high quality standards, was the use for the Bridge's Scour Protection work of the "G-BLOCK Mat" system, as well as the advanced methodology developed for its placement by Messrs. DAEDO Co. Ltd. This sophisticated and innovative system led to the achievement of an exceptionally short construction duration so contributing to that early completion. This methodology uniquely enables the precast blocks to be placed in "linked mats" of up to 12 units and, with the design parameters utilised for the block sizing on this Bridge, each of these "mats" weighed about 24 tonnes.

      As a result of the above innovations, the Scour Protection works on this project were completed with speed and precision immediately before the start of 1999 Flood Season on the Han River, After that flood season a video underwater survey indicated that there had been no displacement of the mats and, consequently, that the new protection system had performed ideally and fully in accordance with the design. This was particularly satisfying since the efficiency and stability of this system will be enhanced further over the first few years of its life as alluvium from the river builds up and consolidates in the gaps between the blocks.

      I am therefore, happy to fully recommend the use of this "high technology" system for the scour protection of bridges, or equivalent structures, in similar circumstances.
